KDE 4.3 Beta 1: A Short Preview

KDE 4.3 Beta 1: A Short Preview

The KDE team made the first beta of version 4.3 of their desktop available to the general public on May 13th, 2009. As a KDE fan myself, I couldn't wait to try it out. It took a while before Kubuntu packages were made available, however as soon as they were released I jumped on it and installed the beta on my laptop, overwriting version 4.2. What did I think of it? So far, it's amazing and is shaping up to be yet another stellar release from the KDE team.

Please note: this isn't a review by any means, as I am reserving final judgement until KDE 4.3 is completed and released to the public in full form. However, the following is a summary of my experiences with KDE 4.3 so far. If you're a beginner, don't install this beta yet, as it can and probably will destroy your KDE installation as some of the packages had to be force installed. (See below).

Installing KDE 4.3 Beta 1 proved to be my first obstacle, there were installation errors with quite a few packages when I tried to run the upgrade. (This is very typical behavior whenever I test KDE beta's on Kubuntu, and I'm not certain if the packages just aren't being tested by the packagers or if the problem lies within the KDE source code). Regardless, I had to issue the "apt-get -f install" command repeatedly, and even force packages to install that were stubborn. After a little battle, I emerged victorious and was able to get the beta installed.

After rebooting into my newly installed KDE 4.3, I had another small problem, all of my plasmoids were all over the place in a seemingly random order. This was easily fixed, all I had to do was move them back to where they were supposed to be. In addition, I had a problem with Digikam as well. The current Digikam compile in the Kubuntu repositories is simply not compatible with KDE 4.3 and image previews do not appear. (There is a fix, however).

Other than those problems, I had no other issues at all. Once I configured and set up my desktop, everything else just worked. Considering the current stage of KDE 4.3's life, not having everything broken is surprising. (Previous KDE beta's at this stage were barely usable). The overall desktop in fact feels much faster and more responsive than before. My battery life even increased. I don't know why.

KDE 4.3 features a new Plasma theme, called "Air", though for some reason when I first installed 4.3, it was set up with the old Oxygen theme instead. The Air theme was uploaded to KDE-Look.org by one of its users, so I went ahead and installed it on my machine so I could get the full 4.3 experience. (Warning: If you install that theme on an earlier version of KDE, it won't look as good). I must say, the Air theme is lightyears ahead of the previous Oxygen theme, in my opinion. It can be hard to see text on the desktop with the new theme though, but that is easily rectified as you can change the text color on the desktop to whatever you want.

One problem I've had with KDE 4.0, 4.1 and 4.2 was the braindead way that the application icons were sorted on the Kickoff menu. Having the application icons sorted by description rather than the name of the program was very difficult to follow. (Instead of looking for "Firefox" to launch your web browser for example, you would instead look for it under "Web Browser"). I'm happy to announce that after I have bugged the KDE developers about this issue and mentioned the problem in countless articles and reviews, there is finally a way to configure the menu to sort the applications by name. Hallelujah! It may sound like a small thing to be excited about, however if you've used KDE 4 you probably already know what I'm talking about and how annoying it was.

There are a ton of features in KDE 4.3, more than I could possibly mention in one article. It seems that there are improvements all over the place. The Folder View plasmoid received a major update though, in the form of "contextual browsing". (That's probably not what it's really called, but that's what I'm calling it). This is huge. Basically what this allows you to do is browse your files without clicking anything. If you have a Folder View plasmoid on your desktop, just point your mouse to one of the icons. As soon as your mouse cursor touches a folder icon, a context window opens up showing you its contents. Hover your mouse over any of the folders that come up in the popup window to show another popup window with the contents of that folder. You can keep drilling down into your folders this way until you find the file you are looking for. This feature is just plain genius.

Overall: While this is just a beta with its share of problems here and there, KDE 4.3 is shaping up to become the desktop of the year when it is released in July. The amount of innovation the KDE team is able to put in their releases these days is astonishing. KDE 4.3 is fast & responsive with many improvements, and is just plain beautiful. Make sure you give it a shot when the final version is released this summer. You won't regret it.

You can check out a screenshot of the new desktop below. Click on it for a larger view.

Specto: Get Instant Notifications In Your Linux Machine

Specto: Get Instant Notifications In Your Linux Machine

May. 27th, 2009 By Damien Oh

notify-osd compliance If you want to monitor a blog for new article update, a great way is to subscribe to its RSS feed and get notified instantly when it updates its content. What if you want to monitor more than just a blog, such as a static website, your email account, a file and you are a Linux user? In that case, Specto could come in handy.

Specto is a Linux-based desktop application that allows you to watch for configurable events and get notified instantly when updates are available. Things that you can monitor include websites, emails, files/folders, system processes and connection ports.

The way Specto works is very easy. If you are monitoring a particular website, like your Facebook account for new messages on your wall, Specto grabs the file size of that site at regular interval and compares it with the previous version. If there are any changes, it will notify you via an unobtrusive popup at the corner of the system taskbar. You can define an error margin so that Specto won't notify you for small changes to the site (such as rotating ads).

Specto is available as a package in the software repository of most Linux distro, so Linux users shouldn't have much difficulty in installing it in your system.

After you have installed it, you can easily add events via its interface window. There are only several simple configurations so anyone, even if you have no technical knowledge, can use it easily.

To monitor a website, you just have to enter the name of the event, the update interval and the website's URL. As mentioned above, you can set the error margin at the bottom of the window.

specto-add-watch

Specto comes with native support for Gmail, which means you can simply enter your username and password and have it notify you when new mails arrived. If you are using other email accounts, you will have to configure the POP3 or IMAP account accordingly.

specto-add-email

If you want to monitor a particular file/folder, system processes or ports, the configuration process is the same as the above steps.

Whenever there is an update to the event that you are watching, Specto will popup a notification message just below its icon at the task bar. If you are using Ubuntu Jaunty, it also support the NotifyOSD feature.

Import/Export feature

What if you are using multiple computers but want to maintain the same setting and watch the same events throughout every computer? Specto comes with the import/export feature where you can easily and quickly export your configuration file in one machine and import it in another machine.

Conclusion

This may not be the 'must-have' application in your Linux machine, but if you are currently spending a lot of time monitoring some mundane but important stuff on the Web or your network files, you can be sure that Specto is going to make your life much easier.

What do you currently have Specto or any other applications monitoring? Let us know how you did it, in the comments.

NVIDIA Releases 185.18.14 Display Driver

NVIDIA Releases 185.18.14 Display Driver

Posted by Michael Larabel on May 29, 2009

NVIDIA hasn't released as many Linux driver updates in May as they have in past months, but this week they are out with the NVIDIA 185.18.14 driver update. This proprietary driver for x86 and x86_64 Linux features a variety of bug-fixes, VDPAU enhancements, and better support for newer Linux kernels. Interestingly, NVIDIA hasn't updated their proprietary FreeBSD or Solaris drivers to this latest version, nor have they even been updated in a while.

Some of the fixes in the NVIDIA 185.18.14 Linux driver update include fixing Xinerama with WINE and other programs to prevent GLXBadDrawable errors, more graceful fall-backs if the NVIDIA kernel module fails to load, a DisplayPort problem when dealing with power management, memory management performance problems in a composited environment, VT switching problems, and many other fixes.

Specific to VDPAU are some corruption fixes with H.264 video decoding, improved performance in the VDPAU noise reduction algorithm, VDPAU validation for whether overlay usage is supported with blit-based presentation queue fall-back, and improved interaction between VDPAU and PowerMizer.

This new Linux release also adds support for new horizontal interlaced and checkerboard passive stereo modes. This release also adds support for multiple swap group members on G80 hardware and later Quadro GPUs.

The NVIDIA Linux 185.18.14 driver change-log and FTP download links can be found at NvNews.net.

Review - Fedora 11 Preview

Review - Fedora 11 Preview

RedHat, one of the biggest contributor to open source and Linux, proved the world that the Open Source service based model is profitable. RedHat introduces all the exiting new technologies in Fedora, the community driven distribution sponsored by RedHat. These technologies will be integrated into the official RetHat distribution after they are mature enough. The technologies like udev, upstart, SELinux, pulseaudio, Plymouth, Xen and KVM are first introduced (if I remember correctly) in Fedora and then later integrated into various other distributions. I've not used Fedora as my main desktop, but I always try every release of Fedora to get a feel of the new technologies.

Fedora 11 will have the following features besides package version upgrades.

  • 20 seconds boot time to log in screen from the 30 second Fedora 10 boot time
  • EXT4 as the default file system
  • OpenChange for native access of Microsoft Exchange
  • rpm 4.7 (improved performance)
  • Automatic multimedia codecs, fonts and mime installer

I've used the GNOME version of the Fedora release for this review on a DELL Inspiron laptop.

Installation:

Anaconda is the installer for Fedora, which has not changed much but the introduction of EXT4 file system introduced few complications. You need to create an EXT4 root partition and an EXT3 boot partition as the live image can only be installed on an EXT4 file system and the GRUB version available will not support booting from EXT4 partitions. The latest Ubuntu and Mandriva versions, which were released a month before the final release of Fedora support booting from EXT4. Please refer this if you need more information on why Fedora 11 could not boot from an EXT4. Also, note that Fedora is one of the first distributions to support EXT4 file systems.

After partitioning, the installer showed an exception and forced me to restart the installation, but I could not reproduce the exception afterwards.

One notable usability issue with the intaller is that the partitoning screen showed 'Replace existing Linux System' instead of 'Use the free space' when my HDD had a lot of free space. Also, the 'Review and Modify Partitioning Layout' option was not enabled by default. The installer did not detect the existing Linux installations.

Hardware Detection:

All the hardware components were detected and configured properly except the mouse scrolling in the thouchpad. You may need to install/upgrade the 'synaptics' package to enable the scrolling. The 'Function' keys and front panel multimedia keys on the laptop worked as expected. The Reliance USB CDMA broadband connection was detected and configured when I plugged the USB device. The NetworkManager Mobile Broadband capability is a certainly a major improvement.

Look 'n' Feel:

Fedora's default boot (plymouth) and desktop themes look clear and very professional. In my opinion, Fedora has one of the best visual customizations.

Applications:

The ~650 MB image includes all the applications like Firefox, Pidgin, Transmission, GIMP, Evolution, audio/video player and Brasero, needed for a desktop user. One noticeable application is Palimpsest, which enables us to manage all the connected media devices at one place. Using this tool we can create/delete partitions, check file system for errors and mount/unmount partitions etc. This tool could be considered as a replacement for gparted.

One important missing appilcation is OpenOffice though 'Abiword' is included.

The unified Volume Control application enables us to control all the sound related settings from one place. This helps to have one mixer instead of KMix, ALSA Mixer etc.

The bootloader conofiguration tool crashed every time due to a bug in the application.

The 'SELinux policy generation tool' and 'SELinux troubleshooter tool ' are grouped under Application-->System Tools but the related tool 'SELinux Management' is listed under System-->Administration.

Package Management:

The biggest problematic area in this preview release is the package management. I could not even update my system so for!!!. There are many functional and usability issues which made me to think of this as a beta release than a preview.

Any graphical package manager should support the following functionalities.

  • List installed/available packages
  • Search a Package
  • Install/Remove packages
  • Upgrade the system
  • Add/Remove/Modify repositories
  • Select a mirror

The graphical package manager included in Fedora allowed me to do the first five tasks but not the mirror selection. This might be because the 'yum' manages mirror selections on its own. The first time I tried to update the system I got the GPG key error for the Fedora i386 repository. I've to Google and find a way to bypass the signature checking. Even after this workaround I was not able to update my system as there are some packages missing in the repositories. This issue might be solved using a different mirror but did not try so far. This very basic functionality should be working without any issues since this being a 'Preview' release.

Fedora does not include any copyrighted codecs and hence to play common media files you need to download the gstreamer bad, ugly and ffmpeg plug-ins. I tried to install the these plug-ins but after downloading the packages, the 'yum' failed to install because of the GPG error. Since I did not know the workaround to bypass this check initially, I had to install the packages by manually installing them :-). After installing the codecs and VLC, I was able to play all the media files.

There are also some usability issues with the graphical package manager. When you upgrade the system or install a package, the status of the sequence of operations being performed was not shown by default. You need to open the icon on the panel to get the progress of what is being done. If you do not see this icon or you fail to see a status message which is being shown in a corner in the package manager, then there is no way you can tell what the package manager is doing. The icon, when clicked, showed the progress of the download but not the download speed. If you need to a detailed information, you need to use the 'yum' terminal command.

The package manager also had trouble displaying the category 'Package Collections'.

Conclusion:

The Fedora preview release has some important issues which may scare first time desktop users. I hope these issues will be addressed in the final release.

Fedora 11's best five features

Fedora 11's best five features

Fedora, Red Hat's community Linux's arrival has been delayed until early next week, June 2, but the release candidate is already looking mighty darn good.

I've been using Fedora 11 since the late beta showed up in mid-April, and I've been very impressed. It's fast, it's stable, and it's got a snazzy new look. That said, there's one change that I'm not crazy about, audio control, so let's get that out of the way first.

In Fedora 11, or more properly its main desktop interface, GNOME 2.26, uses a new and mindlessly simple audio control: the PulseAudio volume control widget. Instead of multiple sliders that give you direct control over the low-level ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) system, you get one slider for volume. That's it.

You can still get to all the audio control ALSA can give you if you elect to use Alsamixer program or its GNOME interface. The default, however, is still that single volume control. That's really ticked off some Fedora users. In time, as GNOME 2.26 is deployed in more distributions, more users will have a chance to be irked by it.

Personally, I like having absolute control of my audio system, but then before I ever touched a computer I was working with stereo equipment. For most users, the multiple slider approach is over-kill. Jonathan Corbet, the well-known Linux developer, has the best answer: "the volume control should have an 'expert mode.'" Hopefully this common-sense suggestion will be implemented as the default in forthcoming versions of GNOME.

With that out of the way, let's move on to the good stuff.

1) Fast Boot: Fedora developers' goal was to get users from turning on their PC to a GNOME login screen in 20-seconds or less. They did it. While it's not as fast as the firmware Linux distributions like SplashTop or Moblin 2.0, it's the fastest boot-up of a full Linux distribution I've seen on a desktop PC.

In my case, using a Gateway GT5622 with a 1.8GHz Intel Pentium E2160 dual-core CPU, 3GBs of RAM, a 400GB SATA drive, and an Intel 950 GMA (graphics media accelerator) Fedora 11 booted for me in 18.9-seconds. By comparison, Vista SP2 -- yes, Microsoft's newest -- took 58-seconds to boot on the same machine.

2) Ext4 file system by default. Ext4 is the latest official Linux file system, and its biggest advantage is for servers. You see, with Ext4 you can have file systems of up to 1 EB (ExaByte) and up to 16 TB (TeraByte) sized files. Even if you're not running enterprise-sized databases, though Ext4 enables faster disk performance and better drive space management than the previous Ext3 default. This is one of those changes that are invisible to most users, but the overall effect is to boost your computer's overall speed.

3) Better graphics. Fedora 11 uses X.server 1.6 for graphics and that means you'll see an overall better and more stable display. Where this really shows to its best advantage is if you're using multiple displays, but even if you're just running a laptop with a 12" display, you'll still notice that the graphics are a smidge faster.

There is one problem here though. In the past, if you ran into a real graphics foul-up, power Linux users have long used the key-combination "Control-Alt-Backspace" to kill and restart X.server. Unless you manually set this on in the x.org file, that key combo no longer works. That said, I haven't had any need to re-start X.server in Fedora 11. Still, I went ahead and reset it to the old behavior because I'm so used to using it.

4) Synaptics touchpad improvements. I have a confession to make. I hate touchpads. I find them annoying and hard to use. On laptops and netbooks, I either buy a model with a ThinkPad style Trackpoint or use a mouse. But, the new Synaptics update has me at least considering using a touchpad. The overall effect is to make touchpads more responsive and I mean that in a good way. If you're a laptop/touchpad user, this change alone is enough to consider using Fedora 11.

5) DNSSEC. Linux, as a standalone operating system, is much more secure than most operating system. Anything though that works with the Internet is vulnerable to attacks on the Internet infrastructure. Recently, though, attacks against the DNS (Domain Name System), the Internet's address system, have become more common. To help secure your connection to the Internet, Fedora now includes DNSSEC (DNS Security Extensions) by default. Since I use Fedora, and its relatives RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) and CentOS for some of my Internet servers, I really appreciate this added level of security.

Whether you use Fedora on your servers or desktops, I highly recommend you give this new version a try. It's fast, it's solid, and it's up to date. It's really everything you could ask for from a do-it-all Linux distribution.

Update on sharing documents

Update on sharing documents

Three years ago (!) I wrote a post called "How do you share documents?" where I essentially said "When you give documents to others that you do not expect them to change, use PDF. If they need an updatable form, use ODF."

I'm happy to report, at least within IBM, this document sharing strategy is really taking hold. I suspect it is true with many other organizations as well, though not all, of course.

Why is this happening? First of all, many people are moving away from Microsoft Office and therefore their document storage format is now more likely to be ODF, the Open Document Format, rather than the classic .doc, .ppt, and .xls. What is enabling them to move is the free availability of software like Lotus Symphony and OpenOffice.org. Moreover, these applications offer free PDF generation.

Newer versions of Microsoft Office offer PDF support and rather odd partial ODF support, but I don't now have and have no plans to obtain any version of Office. I just don't need it. Perhaps it might be my personal history fighting what I still consider the unnecessary OOXML specification, but I never, ever get sent an OOXML file from anyone inside or outside IBM. It takes surprisingly little education to convince people that using OOXML is a bad idea.

Looking at my own email, I would estimate that 10% of the attachments are either .doc or .ppt files, with the rest being ODF or PDF. For the moment, people often send both ODF and PDF, but for final presentations on conferences calls, it is almost always just PDF.

This kind of transformation takes time, but it is just a question of changing the network effect. Start by not sending modifiable document files when a PDF will do. Then start using ODF instead of Microsoft's classic proprietary formats. Do it first in work groups or departments. Get some senior people to start using PDF and ODF. Others will follow their example and, little by little, you'll see this scheme starting to take hold.

Don't be afraid to make policy as in "All presentations delivered to senior management must be in PDF format." You may lose some bells and whistles, but I suspect at that level they are really more worried about content.

6 Tips for a Smooth Zimbra Server Install

6 Tips for a Smooth Zimbra Server Install

Posted in Community, Open Source, PowerTips - Admins, Zimbra Server by Anup Patwardhan on the May 27th, 2009

It may sound odd offering more Zimbra installation advice since there is a lot on the subject in other blogs, our documents, wiki and Forums. In fact, some quick research surfaced over 1.4 million hits for Zimbra server install on the web and 36,000 on the Zimbra site alone.

But we are also fortunate to have more new Zimbra users than ever, and after helping some trial customers recently, it was a good reminder a few simple tips can help cut through some noise and avoid time-consuming snags once you start the install process. So without further ado here are the top 6 common pre-requisites to consider when preparing for your Zimbra installation:

1. Firewall
Servers have firewalls configured once the operating systems are installed for security purposes. Our recommendation is to temporarily disable the firewall on the system during a single and multi-server Zimbra installation. An alternative would be to refer to our installation guide to get a list of ports (see Table 1) used by the application and make sure the ports are open prior to installation. Zimbra-ports

2. DNS setup
All Zimbra configurations store hostnames. We do not have save any IP address information in our configuration. The advantage is this allows an administrator to change IP address (more likely) on the Zimbra system without having to perform any application changes.

This scenario means that all the hostnames to be used in a Zimbra installation have to be defined in DNS. Both A and Mx records for the hostnames and email domains need to be defined and verified prior to beginning your installation.

One other thing to consider is split DNS configuration if you are dealing with servers separated by a firewall.

3. Use of Fully Qualified Hostnames (FQDN)
It is crucial to use a Fully Qualified hostname during the Zimbra configuration. For example, you should enter server1.domain.com instead of server1. This avoids incorrect DNS address lookups and ensures that the client would be connecting to the right application.

4. Port Conflicts
Standard server configuration comes with support for numerous services like POP, IMAP and HTTP (see Table 1). These services are also installed with the Zimbra Network Edition. Therefore, you want to make sure you disable all these services prior to installation. The Zimbra installation scripts will check for any of these port conflicts and notify you to turn these services off before continuing.

5. Libraries and additional packages
Zimbra's rich feature sets are dependent on additional packages being installed on the system. These packages vary between Linux and Mac Operating system. The Zimbra installation script does perform checks to verify all the dependencies have been met, but going through the System Requirements documentation (available on the Zimbra website) before will save you some time.

STORAGE CALCULATION EXAMPLE
(Based on 'Mailbox Usage of 200 MB' and 500 users)

+ User Data: 500 users with 200 MB = 100 GB user data
+ MySQL data: 5% of 100 GB (User Data): 5 GB
+ Zimbra binaries: 10 GB
+ Zimbra logs: 20 GB
+ Zimbra indexes: 25% of 100GB (User Data) = 25 GB

SUBTOTAL:
100 + 5 + 10 + 20 + 25 = 160 GB
Backups: 160 % of Subtotal: 160 * 160% = 256 GB for backups
TOTAL: 160 + 256 = 416 GB

6. Sizing
Storage sizing is important for an excellent performing Zimbra application (see example). If you are doing a Network Edition trial you should contact the Zimbra technical team for sizing information for storage including number of disks, which Raid level to use, and the size of the drives to use. Configuration of the Zimbra store volume is important in satisfying the application IO requirements.

Remember, it's also a good idea to review the Zimbra Quick Installation Guide where you can find this information and many more good tips.

Posted by oran @ 3:44 pm
Blackberry guide

于 09-5-28 通过 All About FC Barcelona 作者:noreply@blogger.com (Bibin)

In a sensational display, FC Barcelona defeated defending champions Manchester United to lift this year's UEFA Champions League Trophy with goals from Eto and Messi. By doing so, FC Barcelona became the first Spanish side to achieve the historic Treble in the history. I doubt whether any Barca fan could have scripted a better game; apart from the early ten minutes, this was "The Perfect Script". This final was billed a the clash of the Titans - Lionel Messi vs Christiano Ronaldo; eventhough Messi out classed his opponent, the two little midfielders - Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez emerged victorious. All the doubts of who will next Ballon d'Or and WPOY were almost settled buut Iniesta may ask some quastions particularly if he can continue with his excellent performance in to the Confederation Cup. Prior to the game everyone who knew anything about football singled out FC Barcelona's make-shift defense as the factor which settle this match. But they held on their own but I still believe it was that make-shift defense which encouraged Manchester United to open up a bit more than they did last season. FC barcelona's performance was so dominating such that English media may not come out with a conspiracy theory, like they do after any defeat.

It was a clash between the "Best Attack" in the world agaisnt the "Best Defense". But in the end the battle in the midfield settled the game. Iniesta and Xavi rans circles around Anderson, Carrick and Giggs. They dominated the match in such a way that we hardly saw Giggs with any possession. The stats from the game were staggering - Iniesta and Xavi were the best passers for Barca whereas for ManU it was Vidic and Ferdinand. Guardiola lined up a starting eleven as expected. Valdes kept the goal. Puyol played the Right Back, Pique and Toure formed the Central Defense and Sylvinho played on the left of defense. The midfield saw Xavi and Iniesta pairing up again with Busquets. The front trio was the familiar Henry, Eto and Messi combination. My only problem withe the line up was the presence of Busquets in the midfield but he proved my doubting wrong with a very good performance. From the start of the match Messi and Eto swapped their positions. Messi lied deep in the centre forming a diamond formation with the other three midfielders.

FC Barcelona started the game very nervously. Manchester United constantly raided the Barca box in the first ten minutes. Puyol was having huge problem dealing with Rooney's pace on the right. In the 2nd minute Toure gave away free kick from 30 yards out when he blocked Anderson. Ronaldo fired the free kick with blistering force straight at Valdes, Valdes failed to hold on the ball and Pique had to quickly intervene to clear the danger from Park on Rebound. Barca defense looked very tentative and looked out of place in dealing with Ronaldo's pace. In the 9th minute had a shot which just went wide but Valdes looked to have it covered. Iniesta and Henry who came off an injury layoff weren't having a great game in the first ten minutes. Then in the 10th minute Iniesta received a pass on the half line, he got between Anderson and Carrick and wasily speeded away from them, then he sent in a great pass to Eto on the right in the box; Eto turned inside Vidic before toe-poking a shot low at the near post of Van Der Sar. Eto had been struggling for form recently but that goal settled even his nerves. FC barcelona took complete control of proceedings after that whereas Manchester United were compeletly shaken. In the 16th minute Ronaldo got better of Pique but the defender stopped his run earning a deserving yellow card and conceding a very dangerous free kick just outside the box. Giggs resultant free kick just went high over the bar. Mean while the two lilliput midfield giants of Barca were taking complete control of the game. In the 19th minute Messi had his first shot when he unfurled a great left foot strike way outside the box which went agonisingly wide. Then Ronaldo and Giggs had decent half chances which both failed to deliver. In the mean time Iniesta and Messi started to combine way up in the middle and United looked compleetly confused about the entire proceeding. In the 27th minute Iniesta turned around the midfielders and set on a great run which was ended when he was brought down just outside the box, resulting in a free kick. Xavi's free kick went just wide. Then for some time Barca reduced the tempo but acme alive when Messi came to life again towards the end of the first half. Messi tested the defense with a series of spectacular runs one of them almost troubled the defense after Van Der Sar fumbled the initial cross. Then towards the end Iniesta played a delightful chip to henry in the middle which went just high.

Sir Alex Ferguson took off Anderson in halftime and brought in Tevez. they moved to a 4-4-2 formation. Ronaldo was pitted against Puyol but Puyol kept him under check. In the second half Barca's midfield took full control of proceeding and that means Manchester United never had any serious chance. In the 49th minute Iniesta broke off him marker and fed the ball to Xavi who inturn fed Henry on the left. Henry skipped past Ferdinand but was denied by Van Der Sar. Then in the 50th minute Eto sent in a great ball into the middle which missed Messi by a whisker with only Van Der Sar in front. Then in the 52nd minute Iniesta produced another great run which was again ended just outside the box when he was brought down. xavi's resultant free kick hit the post. Manchester United were struggling to retain possession throughout the second half. Feguson brought in Scholes and Berbatov to change this. Then in the 70th minute Xavi picked up a poor clearnace from Evra and sent in an inch perfect cross over Ferdinand's head to Messi; Messi did wonderfully well with the header sending it to the far corner of goal and sealing the match completely. Immediately Guardiola took off Henry and brought in Keita. In the 72nd minute Manchester United almost scored from a rare counter attack but Valdes produced an excellent save to deny Ronaldo. From then on Barca frustrated Manchester United with their possession game. Van Der Sar produced telling save to deny both Puyol and Iniesta late in the game. In the injury time Guardiola took of Iniesta, the best player on pitch and brought in Pedro with barca fans and players already ecelebrating.

As I mentioned earlier this was the most perfect match we played this season, especially considering the players we missed in defense. Iniesta and Xavi were the best Barca players on the pitch. Guardiola should be in cloud Nine after winning all the trophies in his debut year as coach. Alex Ferguson is a master in tactics but didn't read the game at half time. He failed to realise that ManU was losing the midfield battle. He should have brought in Scholes in place of Anderson but then I don't have any complaints. I had serious doubts about Busquets but he did remarkably well once he got settled after the first goal. It was great to see the likes of Sylvinho and Gudjohnsen enjoying this victory, both of them might depart the club in summer. This month has to be the best month for any Barca fan - three trophies bloody hell!! There could be reinforcements coming in summer but for now just relish on this moment. And this clash settles who is better - Christiano Ronaldo or Messi for now.

Copy and paste text with your BlackBerry

Copy and paste text with your BlackBerry

Posted by Joe on May 26, 2009

We kick off the four-day week with a basic tip for BlackBerry users. The more advanced probably know how to do this already, but I'm sure this will benefit a few someones out there. Did you know your BlackBerry has a relatively simple copy and paste function? If not, you can find out how after the jump.

Once you find text you want to copy to the clipboard, scroll the trackball to the beginning. Then hold down the shift key and scroll to the end of the passage. This can be a bit frustrating at first, since it's easy to scroll well past your intended point. Once you have all of your text selected, hit the Menu button. You should see an option for Copy. Click it.

Just like copying on your computer, the text is now stored on the BlackBerry clipboard, ready for pasting whenever you wish. Just find an editable text field and hit the Menu button. You'll see the option Paste towards the top. Just click, that, and the text will appear wherever your cursor is on the screen.

To clear the clipboard, go to Options, Security Options, Memory Cleaning. Set it to Enable, and then hit the Menu button. Select Clear Now. It will clear up some memory, including the contents of the clipboard.

Handy Linux distro that can be built on the fly

Handy Linux distro that can be built on the fly

A couple of days back, my friend Stuart and I were trying to configure a device via a serial port. You're probably thinking that's not so hard, just hook up a console cable, fire up a terminal emulator, make sure you have the right settings and you're good to go, hey?

Except that neither of us had a serial port on our laptops… and the only PC we had available with a serial port wasn't configured with an operating system (at least not one we had the password for).

Thanks to a great Linux distribution called Slax, we were able to build a boot CD that included minicom in just a few seconds and after downloading and burning we could boot the PC from CD. All it took then was to configure Minicom to use /dev/ttyS0 (if we had used a USB to serial connector it would have been /dev/ttyUSB0), with /var/lock for the lockfile, 9600 8N1 Baud/parity, hardware flow control on, software flow control off and we were connecting to the console output (David Sudjiman described something similar to configure his Cisco router from Ubuntu).

I'm sure I could have used an alternative, like Knoppix but the real beauty of Slax was the ability to create a custom build on the fly with just the modules that are required. I could even put it on a USB stick…

Reading around on the 'net afterwards I came across Van Emery's Linux Serial Console HowTo which turns things around the other way (using a serial port to get into a Linux machine). I though it might be fun (in a retro sort of way) to hook up some dumb terminals to a Linux PC but I'm not sure what I'd do with them though… web browsing via Lynx? A bit of command line e-mail? Definitely a geek project.

25th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in IT看天下

Where to Buy a Preinstalled Linux Desktop/Laptop

Where to Buy a Preinstalled Linux Desktop/Laptop

Posted on Saturday, May 23, 2009 at 6:12 pm by jdeslip

The hardest part of using Linux is often installing it.  Over the last couple of years, Linux has come a long way in terms of hardware support, and these days it is relatively rare that an installation of ubuntu/fedora will be lacking any drivers for your machine. However, installing any OS can still sometimes be a tedious task and one that scares the wits out of the average computer user. And, for the expert users out there, it's just more fun to buy a computer with Linux already on it and not have to pay the Microsoft tax - even, if you are going to put your favorite distro on it anyway.  You can find Linux servers sold all sort of places, but where can you find Linux desktops for sale? Here is a list:

q2wk12_ubuntu_729x200

Dell http://www.dell.com/ubuntu

I bought a laptop (1420) from dell with ubuntu preinstalled.  It showed up and all of the hardware immediately worked flawlessly: webcam, wifi, suspend/resume, audio, compiz etc…  The good thing about buying a dellbuntu, as opposed to a computer from Best Buy, is you can be absolutely sure that everything will be supported.  Beyond piece of mind, buying an ubuntu machine from Dell sends a message to the big manufactures that there is a demand for Linux and Linux support on their computers.

zareason-open-source-systems

ZaReason http://www.zareason.com

ZaReason is a local Berkeley company that sells preinstalled Ubuntu desktops and laptops all over the world.  They also sell Ubuntu swag such as case badges to replace any "powered by windows" stickers on your old computers (of which I have bought to give away at our meetings).  The prices start low and the computers are available with many customizations.  Whenever you buy a machine from ZaReason, they include a screwdriver in your package, letting you know that you are free to tinker with your computer.  If you want a preinstalled Ubuntu computer with great Linux support and would rather promote a small Linux only dealer than a big corporation like Dell, consider ZaReason.  I intend to buy my next computer from them.

System76 http://www.system76.com

Like ZaReason, System76, sells preinstalled Ubuntu Laptops / Desktops (and now they have their very own netbook).  They were one of the first companies to sell their own Linux systems and have a large user and support community (including their own forum at ubuntuforums).  Hardware support is flawless and they have a wide array of machines designed for everyday users, to business laptops to servers.  I have never had experience with a System76 machine, but have heard nothing but good things.

emperor_mascot_thumb

EmperorLinux http://www.emperorlinux.com

Unlike System76 and ZaReason, EmperorLinux does not create their own computers.  They get high-end computers from Dell/Lenovo (including several tablet options) and install Linux on them for you.  These are great for power users who want a high end (or business) machine with Linux on it.   But, it does not have the advantage of being a true Linux computer from start to finish.

LinuxCertified http://www.linuxcertified.com/linux_laptops.html

Linux certified also sells some preinstalled Linux laptops/desktops. I know very little about these machines, but they are worth looking into before you decide on a purchase.

Netbooks

Since the EeePC, a lot of netbooks have flooded the market, most with a Linux option.  I own and love the EeePC 901.  It originally came with a somewhat lame Linux distro based on Xandros.  However, I have installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix on it, and it is a great little Linux laptop.  Here are EeePC Linux options available at Amazon.Com:

Finally, it looks like HP  is getting back into the game…

Modify xorg.conf for better performance

Modify xorg.conf for better performance

Linux

Most distributions configure your graphics card and display automatically, but xorg.conf is still well worth fiddling with. It's a text file that contains all the configurations details required by the X server to deliver a graphical display and provide a connection between your keyboard, your mouse, and the computer. Read on to understand how xorg.conf works, tweak it for maximum performance and add functionality.

In many ways, xorg.conf sits on the surface of your installation like the broken walls of some lost building on an archaeological site. The file contains the last vestiges of what was once a complex and convoluted configuration file, using a syntax and language from a time gone by. Over the years, those old structures have been removed, rebuilt, subverted, tweaked and squeezed through several generations of users, distros and hardware. It has finally got to the point where many modern distributions (such as Fedora 10) eschew xorg.conf completely, taking advantage of the automatic configuration hidden within the newer versions of X.org.

Mandriva Control Centre

Every distro has its own display settings panel, which is useful if you're not sure about your hardware.

For most users, this automatic trend is a definite advantage. It means that those days where nothing appeared on screen after installation, or when the keyboard didn't type type the right letters, are long gone. But xorg.conf is still relevant, and whether you want to fine-tune your setup for extra performance or troubleshoot a display problem, it's still the first port of call when the automatic tools aren't quite automatic enough.

The main reason why you may want to tweak the xorg.conf file is to create a more suitable graphics output configuration for your system. That may include getting the native resolution for your screen, or enabling two screens to be used at once. You can also tweak how your hardware is configured, enabling proprietary features such as a cursor drop-shadow or increasing the refresh rate of the screen output. Xorg.conf normally lives in the /etc/X11 directory.

If it doesn't exist (as in Fedora 10), or the included file is too minimal to be of any use, the best way to generate a new file is to switch to the command-line as root, then copy the X.org log file from the currently running session to a new session by typing 'pp /var/log/Xorg.0.log /var/log/Xorg.1.log', and follow this by typing 'Xorg -configure :1'. X.org will recreate the xorg.conf file from the contents of the log file, and place xorg.conf.new in your home directory. If you manually install Nvidia's proprietary drivers, the installer can also generate a new xorg.conf file.

Orientation

Before we dive in to the details, it's worth learning how to recognise a few of xorg.conf's features in case you ever get lost. The main thing to understand is that it is split into several sections, and most of those don't deal directly with the display. That's because, historically, the X server was responsible for the entire contents of an interactive session between your dumb terminal and the mainframe computer that was doing all the work. As such, it needed to combine the display routines with those that handled input devices like a keyboard or a mouse. And it performs those same tasks today.

Module: Within this section, there's a list of the plugin modules used by X.org to add functionality to the display. The 'glx' module, for example, adds 3D acceleration to your desktop, while 'type1' and 'freetype' modules are used for native font rendering.

ServerLayout: This is where the three main periphals required for a working X.org session are tied together. This section contains the names of the keyboard, mouse and screen definitions used elsewhere within the xorg.conf file.

InputDevice: There are generally two input device sections within xorg.conf: one for the mouse, and one for the keyboard. Most mice and keyboards are broadly compatible with the same protocols, which means they should work without too much modification. An exception to this rule is if you want to enable additional features on your hardware, such as extra buttons on a mouse or spare keys on a keyboard.

Monitor: This section lists the specification for your screen. The most important parameters are the vertical and horizontal rates, as these are used to calculate exactly what resolutions your screen is capable of. Specific resolutions for your display can be created using the 'ModeLine' instruction.

Device: Your graphics hardware is listed in this section along with the driver that's going to be used. Most commonly this is either 'nv' for the open source Nvidia driver, 'nvidia' for the proprietary one, 'ati' for the open source ATI driver and 'fglrx' for the proprietary one. Intel drivers are open source, and depend on your exact hardware. 'i810' is a popular choice for the embedded Intel 845 video hardware, for example.

Screen: This section pulls together your graphics device and your monitor configuration into what X.org calls a 'screen', which is a usable display configuration. You could use two screens for a dual-monitor setup, for instance.

Fix your monitor

Most of the time, your screen's capabilities should be identified using something called EDID - Extended Display Identification Data. This is a chunk of information sent from your display to your graphics card, and normally contains information such as your screen's model and manufacturer, resolution timings and display size. X then uses this data to create appropriate resolutions and bit depths that make optimal use of your hardware.

But sometimes a manufacturer's EDID may be inaccurate or incomplete, and you may find that resolutions you know your hardware supports aren't available in your distro's display configuration panels. In these cases, you can manually add your screen's capabilities to the xorg.conf file, but you'll need to be careful: if you create a resolution your screen can't handle, there's a chance you may permanently damage it. So before you start, make sure you have the correct specs for your hardware, and that you don't deviate from them no matter how tempting it might be to create a screen resolution of 4,000x2,000.

Here's an example Monitor section with both the horizontal and vertical frequencies specified:

Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Unknown"
ModelName "DFP-0"
HorizSync 28.0 - 72.0
VertRefresh 43.0 - 60.0
ModeLine "1440x900_60.00" 106.5 1440 1520 1672 1904 900 901 904 932 -hsync +vsync

You can see that both frequencies define a range for which the device will operate, and these are the two most important parameters for creating a usable configuration. The ModeLine line is optional, as X.org will calculate these automatically. But if you're having problems getting the correct resolution, the ModeLine can be used to 'hard code' a resolution for your screen. These lines require an in-depth knowledge of how your display hardware works, and are almost impossible to work out by hand. But there are several tools that can calculate appropriate resolutions for you: go to this page, for example, and you'll be able to enter your screen specification and required resolution to create a ModeLine for your device.

The MythTV wiki also contains a useful database of ModeLine definitions for common output devices, which is particularly useful if you're trying to configure a television as a monitor. See this page.

Glxgears

Glxgears, part of the mesa-demos package, is a good test to see whether your xorg.conf tweaks are having any effect.

Tweak your graphics card

As with the monitor section, there are plenty of tweaks and additions you can make to the device section that will affect how your graphics card performs. However, most of these tweaks are specific to the capabilities and manufacturer of graphics card you're using. We've found that Nvidia devices are the most widespread, and many Linux users are happy to use the proprietary drivers to maximise their performance.

But there are also plenty of people using proprietary drivers from ATI, and the open source drivers from Intel. However, neither of these manufacturer offer any xorg.conf tweakability in the same way that Nvidia does. ATI users, for example, can alter various performance and configuration characteristics for their hardware using either the aticonfig command line tool, or the Catalyst Control Centre configuration panel. At the other end of the scale, Intel's hardware and drivers aren't designed for high performance, but they do give you some options to try.

Xorg.conf troubleshooting

If you're having problems getting any kind of working display configuration, you need to start with the lowest functional denominator. This means using something called the Vesa driver. Vesa is an ancient standard for PC graphics hardware, and that means that almost any card should support it. Just replace the Driver string in the Device section with vesa, and try restarting the X server. You should at least be able to use your desktop.

But Vesa screens are slow in comparison with other drivers, and while they work well for troubleshooting, they're not a long-term solution. If Vesa does display, it's likely that your problem is with either your choice of driver, or the configuration of the driver. Try typing lspci on the command line, and looking for your graphics hardware listed after 'VGA compatible controller'. This should give you some idea of the driver you should be using. It's worth noting that older hardware from both Nvidia and ATI needs a different driver to the newer ones ('nv' for older Nvidia cards, and 'radeon' for older ATI models).

If you're still having problems, take a look at the contents of the X.org log file. This can normally be found in the /var/log directory, and is called Xorg.0. The number at the end of the filename is the session number; this is nearly always zero, but it could also be 1. This lists each step that X.org takes while creating your display, and if it encounters problems, they'll be listed here. You could also try starting X.org with the xorg -verbose argument, as this creates more output in the log file. The most common error at this stage is an incorrect screen-mode definition in xorg.conf. We'd recommend commenting out all 'ModeLine' entries by putting a # symbol in front of them, and trying to start X.org with as simple a configuration as possible.

Nvidia

The proprietary Nvidia drivers offer a bewildering set of customisation options that can be set within xorg.conf. Each option consists of a single line of text that can be placed into either the Device or Screen sections of your xorg.conf file. Here our choice picks of the ones worth experimenting with.

Option "NoLogo" "true": This option suppresses the Nvidia logo that appears whenever the driver is initialised. Not only does this save a small chunk of boot time, it also makes the boot process feel slightly more refined.

Option "LogoPath" "string": If it's just the Nvidia logo that you find annoying you could replace it with something more to your taste, such as a photo of Mount Etna, or your pet poodle. Just replace string in the above command with the path to a PNG file.

Option "CursorShadow" "true": If your cursor has always felt out of place on your Compiz-enabled desktop, with its drop shadows and transparency, worry no more. This option will force your Nvidia hardware to draw a shadow for the mouse pointer. Two further options, CursorShadowXOffset and CursorShadowYOffset, enable you to define the position of the shadow relative to the original image.

Option "Coolbits" "true": We have to mark this option as experimental, and it should only be enabled if you're confident in the capabilities of your system. That's because this option unlocks the overclocking potential of your hardware, enabling you to take manual control over the processor and memory speed on your card. This is useful if you want to squeeze every last potential polygon from your hardware, but useless and highly likely to damage your hardware if you don't. The overclocking options appear in the nvidia-settings application.

Option "DPI" "75 x 85": If the Dots Per Inch (DPI) setting of your screen is incorrectly set, this can affect the size and rendering of fonts. X.org will normally calculate the correct DPI of your display using the dimensions embedded within EDID data provided by your monitor, but this can sometimes be wrong or inaccurate. In which case, use this option to manually override the value. A 1,440x900 resolution screen, with a physical size of 16x10 inches, would have a DPI of (1,440/16)x(900/10) = 90x90.

Nvidia dual view

Stretching your desktop across two screens is on the most productive system upgrades you can make.

Intel

Various users have reported improvements to Intel-based graphics devices by changing a few of the options around in xorg.conf. But the key to success with Intel hardware seems to be down to trial and error, and it's a classic case of 'your mileage may vary': some options may work, some may not. For this reason, you should only make a single change at a time, and if you're happy with the results, make the change permanent and remember to keep a backup.

The most important option we've found is to enable the new 'EXA' acceleration architecture in X.org by adding the following to the Device section:

Option "AccelMethod" "EXA": This is particularly helpful with KDE 4's new compositing effects, and can improve the screen refresh rate on many Intel 943/940 integrated graphics controllers that might be having problems. You could also try making the ExaNoComposite either false or true to see if that improved performance.

The following two options may also improve your 3D OpenGL performance and quality, and may even help ATI and Nvidia hardware users:

Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy" and Option "TripleBuffer" "true"

MigrationHeuristic must be the best sounding option we've ever come across. It sounds more like middle management speak for voluntary redundancy. But what it actually governs is the amount of pixelmap data that is moved to video memory. Video memory is faster than standard RAM, so greedy improves performance at the expense of leaving less memory for more textures. But this shouldn't be a problem for normal desktop usage. The TripleBuffer option enables a more efficient method of double buffering (the technique used to remove flicker from a screen update).

You now should feel confident enough to at least see what xorg.conf offers, especially if you've never been satisfied with your current display configuration or hardware performance. These tweaks can make massive improvements to older hardware, or even the embedded graphics on netbook devices. Just remember to make small changes, and always - always - make a backup.

Nvidia TwinView

There are two common methods for expanding a single desktop across more than one screen: Xinerama which is a native part of X.org, andTwinView, which works only with Nvidia hardware. You can easily enable TwinView on your Nvidia hardware by using the excellent nvidia-settings application.

But that doesn't always work, and doesn't give you any control over specific resolutions. To create a TwinView configuration from the xorg.conf file, you first need to make sure there are 'Screen' sections for both of your connected displays. If both screens are the same, you'll only need one. You next need to add a new section to your xorg.conf file, which should look like the following:

    Section "ServerFlags"
Option "Xinerama" "0"
EndSection

This disables Xinerama, making sure there's no conflict between the two dual-screen methods. We then need to add several custom Nvidia options, and these should go somewhere in the screen section.

    Option "TwinView" "1"
Option "metamodes" "DFP-0: 1440x900_60.00 +0+0, DFP-1: 1440x900_60.00 +1440+0"

The first line enables Nvidia's TwinView, while the second line is used to create a virtual screen from your two connected monitors.

In our example, this is two flatscreen panels (DFP-0: and DFP-1:), connected with two DVI cables, and running at a resolution of 144x900. We're using the screen mode we defined in the Monitor section of xorg.conf, and the two values that are preceded by the + sign are the offset. For the leftmost screen, the offset is zero for horizontal and vertical. For the right screen, the offset is the horizontal resolution of the first.
